Americorps Position: Literacy Support
Changing lives through literacy! Work with English as a Second Language students and tutors. Teach adult ESL classes and children in the Family Literacy Co-op. ESL teaching, education background, or social work experience preferred.
Position Summary
The Literacy Support Americorps position will assist in both the Adult Literacy and Family Literacy programs. This individual will be responsible for maintaining relationships with students and tutors and providing student educational services within the Adult Literacy and Family Literacy programs.
Desired Qualifications
1.
Experience with instruction or teaching, literacy skills, reading, writing, and English as a
Second Language preferred.
2.
Experience in cross-cultural settings including high communication and social skills.
3.
Experience working with small children preferred.
4.
Ability to speak effectively in public.
5.
Comfortable with computers and data entry.
6.
Must have excellent organizational skills and a proven ability to multi-task.
7.
Ability to function independently and in a group setting.
8.
Compassion, a strong work ethic, and a good sense of humor.
Position Tasks
1.
Assist with Adult Literacy English as a Second Language instruction and classes.
2.
Assist with Family Literacy preschool activities including preschool time, home visits, and
family literacy events.
3.
Provide student and tutor support including student/tutor follow-up and helping with tutor
trainings.
4.
Contact students and tutors as needed with information and for data collection.
5.
Help with data tracking and office support.
6.
Other duties, related to this project, as requested by Adult Programs and Family Literacy.
