Gals Read
making reading fun for girls
2011 Gals Read

The Guys Read program was initially designed to show boys just how much fun reading can be and that men enjoy reading too. Research has shown that boys in elementary school often lose interest in reading books for pleasure and do not consider reading to be a masculine activity. The Guys Read program has been extremely successful in addressing these issues in a fun and meaningful way. It was so successful, in fact, that us gals started to feel left out of all the reading fun. Why shouldn't girls in elementary school get to take part in such a program as well? Can't they benefit from positive, literate female role models? The answer: a resounding "Yes!"

The Gals Read program brings volunteer readers into 10 different elementary schools twice a week spanning four weeks in January and February. Women read from books, handpicked by FNSB Library staff, to appeal to 4th grade girls.
