Annual Events
We have several events that we look forward to every year, and we would love to see you there participating or volunteering!
Biz Bee
The Biz Bee is held each February and sponsored by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. The Biz Bee is LCA's largest yearly fund-raiser. Many local businesses and organizations enter and sponsor teams of three spellers that compete in a spelling bee. In addition, LCA has a silent auction during the event with items donated by those in the community supporting literacy. One of the highlights has been the raffle of two round trip tickets donated by Alaska Airlines and $500.00 cash.
Thank you Fairbanks! With your help we raised over $20,000 for the 20th Annual Biz Bee and over $390,000 has been raised from the past 20 Biz Bees!
The Great Cover-Up
This fund-raiser was created by UAF. Each spring, a "cover" concert is held at UAF with local bands playing the songs and imitating the style of a well-known band. All proceeds benefit LCA.
The Great Cover-Up will be at the UAF Pub on March 31st, 2012.
Golden Mile
Run, walk, or race for literacy! This one-mile fun run is family friendly and is a great opportunity to lead off the Golden Days Parade, run in front of throngs of cheering spectators, have fun while exercising, and win great prizes! The idea began with Jim Brader, a former LCA Board member. This event is sponsored by Alyeska Pipeline Service Company and organized by Running Club North.
Thank you to all of the businesses & organizations who contributed to this event and also to everyone who registered & participated in this race.
LCA Book Drive
This is an annual event that takes place in March. The book drive collects thousands of books each year that are placed back into the community through our Book Recycling Program. To find the location of the drop boxes, tune into 101.1 FM Clear Channel, Fairbanks, or contact LCA.
Thank you Fairbanks! In 2011 the community donated over 20,000 books to help support Forget-Me-Not Books! So far, the 2012 book drive is off to a great start as over 3,000 books have been donated!
Tanana Valley Fair
The Literacy Council of Alaska will have a booth every day of the fair. There will be games! There will be books! You can sign up for tutoring. Stop by and say "hello!"
A unique way to be involved in promoting literacy this year is to offer financial support through the Pick.Click.Give campaign. If you file electronically for your PFD, at the state website , you can designate a portion of your PFD to the Literacy Council of Alaska, Inc. We hope to have 100 PFD donations this year!
As you finish the electronic application click the box, “Yes, I want to participate in the Charitable Contributions program.” You will be able to donate to the Literacy Council of Alaska or many other great Alaskan charities.
