Become a Student!
The LCA has many great programs to help with various types of needs. Check out our programs to learn which program is right for you!
LCA is here to provide classes and one-on-one tutoring to those looking to improve their English skills. We also offer these services to people working towards their GED, but we do not offer GED testing. If you would like to become one of our students, you just have to follow a few simple steps:
- Make an appointment to meet with a staff person to fill out an enrollment application and take two placement tests – one for speaking and one for reading and writing. This intake appointment takes about 2 hours.
- Take a test (BEST for English Language Learners or the TABE for prospective GED students)
- Register for classes and/or sign up for tutoring
- Re-test later to see how you are progressing
- Click here to check out our current class schedule.
Call 907-456-6212 or stop into the Literacy Council at 517 Gaffney Road in Fairbanks to get started!
For adults with young children, the LCA offers preschool classes while parents take literacy classes. Enroll in the Even Start program before signing up for the adult classes! Call 907-456-6212.
School Age
LCA's School Age Tutoring Program trains adult volunteer tutors in learning styles and supports them throughout a six week commitment to individual students. Tutors work with students one-on-one to increase proficiency in areas identified by teachers, as well as to help students increase "school" skills such as staying on task, social skill development, and completion of homework. Based on our community needs, we will also provide short workshops on resume writing and college admissions essay exams. Tutoring is a great way to get some experience, build your resume and positively change the future. We are looking for people who are motivated, who like to work with children. If you are interested in tutoring in the School Age Program call Denise 907-456-6212.
Do you have an elementary student who could use some tutoring during the summer? Or are you a middle school or high school student who would like to do something productive with your summer? Call 907-456-6212 to find out when the sessions start.
Basic and intermediate computer classes are available. Preschool is not available during these classes. Check out our News and Events page to see the current classes offered this quarter, and call 907-456-6212 to sign up.
