Book Recycling

The Literacy Council provides free books for agencies and community organizations.  The Book Recycling program accepts donated books of all kinds, cleans and sorts them, then redistributes them to Forget-Me-Not Books, Literacy Council programs, local organizations, and agencies.

Requesting Books
To request recycle books, contact Jackie Stormer via email or phone 456-6212.

Donations
Book donations are always accepted! Please donate books that are in good quality without torn or missing pages. Books are accepted everyday at the Literacy Council by people who have books they no longer use. Books are also donated by other bookstores such as Gulliver's Books in Fairbanks, who has donated thousands of books annually! Our annual book drive also brings in great books. All donations are tax deductible.

Preparing the Books
Once the books are donated, they are sorted and cleaned before they are ready to go back out. The cleaning process includes cleaning the cover and repairing if needed, taking off stickers, and checking the book for stains. Once they are clean, they are ready to be redistributed.

Programs
Some of the books that are donated include teaching materials or books that are useful for the different programs at the the Literacy Council, such as School Age and Adult Literacy Programs.

Bookstore
Good quality books that are not needed in the programs at the Literacy Council can be sold in Forget-Me-Not Books, the money making arm of the Literacy Council. Visit the Bookstore site for more information.

Online Sales - Click Here!
Some books that are donated are valuable enough to be sold online, generating profit to help support the programs of the Literacy Council. These books are typically good quality vintage books.

Volunteers
Volunteers are needed for many parts of the book recycling process. Volunteers help clean books once they come in and work directly with the bookstore.
