There are two job openings presently at LCA. They will be open until filled.

Job Synopsis: English as a Second Language Director
This position is responsible for directing an Adult Basic Education (ABE) program provided for adults seeking English language skills in reading, writing, speaking and understanding the English language.  The program consists of English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and one-on-one volunteer tutor-student matches. The position recruits, trains and supervises program staff and volunteers to teach or tutor over 150 students yearly.  The position also coordinates with the university, community college, job center and other community resources to insure clients can achieve their educational, life skills and career goals.  The position teaches multiple classes including basic to advanced levels of ESL and Citizenship.

Requirements
College degree in Education, English, Linguistics or related field
Expertise working with English language learners
Compassion, flexibility and patience for students of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds
Demonstrated leadership skills
Experience working with volunteers
Ability to speak effectively in public and collaborate with community organizations

Tasks
Direct, develop and improve literacy program serving English as a Second Language (ESL) adults, to include intakes, assessments, instruction and advising.
Teach ESL classes to students from a wide range of countries and cultures. This includes recruiting ESL students from the community.
Provide individualized educational services to each client, making sure educational, life skills and career needs are met. This includes assisting students with goal-setting.
Recruit, train and support volunteer teachers.
Collaborate with community organizations to meet clients’ needs.
Maintain databases for both LCA and Department of Labor to track student enrollment, retention, progress, demographics and attendance. Report regularly to the Executive Director and the State ABE Director.
Perform PR functions to promote the Literacy Council through local events, social media (e.g. Facebook), emails, letters, presentations and all LCA fund-raisers especially Biz Bee, Volunteer Appreciation Picnic and Run for Gold.
Schedule all ESL classes and teachers, both staff and volunteers and also end-of-session class parties.
Attend semi-annual Adult Basic Education (ABE) Conferences in September and February in Anchorage and complete all paperwork and homework associated therewith.  Communicate information learned at conference to appropriate staff and volunteers at LCA.

Job Synopsis: Math Instructor
The Math Instructor is responsible for teaching math in accordance with the goals of the Fairbanks/Interior Regional ABE Program. This includes preparing students to pass the GED. Multiple levels of math will be offered in partnership with the State’s delivery of amplified math. Instructor will develop and teach course content in line with GED and with Career Pathways curriculum provided by the State of Alaska.  This position is funded by the DOL ABE Grant and  includes 100% instructional time. Reports to the Director of ABE.

Desired Qualifications
1.  Bachelors Degree required
2.  Experience teaching math
3.  Ability to teach and work with adult students and foster a student-centered culture
4.  Familiarity with methods for teaching math and reading comprehension
5.  Ability to search for and procure study materials for students

Job Tasks
1.  Responsible for teaching math classes, including lesson planning;
2.  Assess students’ educational level, teach appropriately, assist with goal setting, and oversee goal achievement and testing.
3.  Attend to the career pathways of students.
4. Conduct support activities including community connections, partnerships, volunteers, and students in order to see to the successful mission of the Literacy Council
5.  Assist with the intakes and orientations of students.
6.  Help with student attendance, data tracking, etc.;
7.  Other duties related to this program as requested by the Director of ABE.
