Job Task Summary

Job Title: Director of Adult Literacy

 

Job Summary

The Director of Adult Literacy is responsible for coordinating services to adult students and their tutors. Responsibilities include supervising program staff, developing new programs, facilitating tutor training workshops, assessing students, supervising instruction provided by volunteer tutors and maintaining student and tutor records and program data. Position will supervise Americorps Adult Literacy Staff.

 

Desired Qualifications

1. College degree in Education or related field

2. Expertise working with English Language Learners

3. Experience working with volunteer tutors

4. Knowledge of curriculum development and testing materials

5. Experience in cross-cultural settings

6. Ability to speak effectively in public

7. Fluency with computers and data entry

8. Must have excellent organizational skills and a proven ability to work under a heavy workload

9. Demonstrated supervisory ability

 

Job Tasks

1. Plan, develop, and coordinate adult based LCA programs and classes

2. Match students with trained volunteer tutors and provide tutor support

3. Facilitate tutor-training workshops in both Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language, including staff and volunteer training to be co-trainers

5. Coordinate publicity and recruitment of students and tutors

6. Maintain program data for quarterly and final reports and for the Executive Director

7. Write “Tutor Times” quarterly newsletter to students and tutors

8. Provide training, supervision and evaluation of Americorps, Vista, and other full time volunteers.

9. Coordinate with community resource agencies to make and receive necessary referrals to ensure adult students receive needed services

10. Make public presentations, as needed, to inform other agencies and the community of services available

11. Coordinate with other LCA programs through program coordinators and the Executive Director

12. Coordinate in-services for volunteer tutors

13. Oversee the ordering of instructional materials

14. Attend annual Adult Basic Education conference in September in Anchorage

15. Other duties, related to this project, as requested by the Executive Director
