Family Literacy
The Literacy Council of Alaska's Family Literacy Program integrates several programs to serve parents and children ages 0 - 7 in an effort to end the intergenerational cycle of illiteracy. FFL’s largest program is Even Start, a federally-funded program for parents with literacy needs who have children ages 0 - 7. Even Start works with parents and children to improve literacy skills. In addition to Even Start, FFL holds Family Fun Nights.
Even Start
Even Start is a federally funded program serving families whose parents need to earn their GED or who want to learn English as their second language. While parents are attending classes, their children can attend the preschool.
Even Start's mission is to help break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by providing educational opportunities for families.
There are four components for Even Start parents.
1. Adult Education: GED preparation and English classes.
2. Early Childhood Education: While parents are attending class, their children can attend

the preschool.
3. Parenting: Classes are offered twice a month and range in various topics from nutrition to

child safety.
4. Parent and Child Together (PACT): Opportunities are offered for families to spend time

interacting with their children. These include Family Fun Nights and story times.
Even Start collaborates with other local agencies to ensure families receive services that will help them achieve both their educational and family goals. We also provide home visits for our families.
Family Fun Nights
Family Fun Nights offer families an evening of food and fun. The evening includes dinner for families, literacy based activities, and are open to Even Start families as well as those from other agencies in Fairbanks. They are held six times a year for two hours each time with each featuring a different theme.
