Adult Literacy Program

The Adult Literacy Program serves 250-300 adults in the Fairbanks community each year. We train and support community volunteers to work one-on-one with adult students in the areas of reading, writing, communication, math, and computer skills. All volunteers become certified tutors through ProLiteracy Worldwide after completing a 14-hour Tutor Training Workshop. In addition, tutors receive support through in-services, monthly Tutor Round-Ups, and quarterly newsletters and phone calls. The instruction is student-centered, and tutors and students work together to set realistic and attainable goals.

We offer five orientations throughout the year. Join us as we discuss adult literacy issues and how volunteer tutoring impacts your community. We will have a guest tutor/student pair come to talk about their experiences. You will learn how our tutoring program works as well as the details of our volunteer positions. This is also a great opportunity to meet program staff and other interested community members. There is no obligation and the orientation is free!
