School-Age Tutoring Program
We recruit, train and support volunteers to tutor children in reading, writing, math and English
as a Second Language. During the summer, teens are hired to teach grade school children in the
Cross-Age Tutoring program. Over 250 children each year are served through the School-Age Program.
The School-Age Program holds two different programs: the After School Tutoring Program and the
Cross-Age Tutoring Program. The After School Tutoring Program is run during the school year and the
Cross-Age Program in the summer.
After School Tutoring Program
LCA's After School Tutoring Program is designed to tutor elementary students who are six months to a
year behind in their academic skills. Rather than offering another hour of a "typical classroom setting"
to students in a structured environment, we offer students a setting where learning occurs in a less
traditional format. Volunteers work one-on-one with students on their individual academic needs.
Cross-Age Tutoring Program
LCA's Cross-Age Tutoring Program is a summer program that trains youth to tutor elementary students
in reading and math. The program has targeted at risk youth for this training since 1984. Tutors work
with students one-on-one to increase proficiency in reading and math as well as to help students
increase "school" skills such as staying on task, social skill development, and completion of homework.
Tutors also work on motivation and self-esteem. The tutors receive training and work on personal
development through work sessions. Tutors and students both increase their academic skills, but the
tutors show larger gains, as measured by a standardized test.
During this program, Fridays are geared towards the tutor to help them increase their school and
jobs skills. During the school year, tutors continue to meet once a month to work on their job skills.
