Volunteers
We couldn't even think about doing what we're doing without the help of our wonderful volunteers. We want to thank them again and again for all of their work! Learn about some of our volunteers and why they volunteer here by reading their stories below. However, to really get to know and befriend our volunteers, you'll just have to become a volunteer yourself.
Meet the Volunteers
"I volunteer at the Literacy Council because I wrote a book and changed my life. I got a lifetime fitness award, graduated from UAF (University of Alaska Fairbanks), and published a book all within my 75th year. It changed my life so I volunteered at the Literacy Council."
-Martha Markey, General Volunteer
"I volunteer by tutoring. My tutoring responsibilities are helping students increase their education level in math, reading, and writing. My favorite thing about tutoring is talking, helping, and laughing with LCA's staff and my students."
-Clarisa Grammont, Cross Age Tutor
"I've been here about two and a half years now. Before I retired from my job, I thought I might like to become a tutor. I've had two students. Lately I've been helping clean and sort books. I enjoy helping here and I've purchased several books here. It gives me something to do in my retirement years. I enjoy books, and I'm surrounded by them. I just thought it would be helpful to volunteer with an organization like this."
-John Seamands, Adult Tutor and Book Cleaning Volunteer
"I like to give back to the community as a retired teacher, as a tutor, and in the bookstore. I'm retired, so it's a great place to be in. It's fun meeting new people in the bookstore."
-Brian Koharian, Adult Tutor and Bookstore Volunteer
"I shelve books and price books. I like all the books and shelving them, putting them in ABC order. I'm weird like that. I got involved volunteering because I need job experience."
-Heather Moritz, Bookstore Volunteer
"It's a great place to work and it's a work that is gratifying. What we do is a good thing. The paid hour runs into the unpaid hour because you feel like its something that needs to be done. You just do it. And the people who work here are good people."
-Denver Hammonds, MAAST worker and Bookstore Volunteer
"I volunteer because I love books. I like working with people and I like discussing books with them. I found out about volunteering from the newspaper. I came in and talked to Becky, and then found out about adopt-a-section. I ended up with Modern Lit, the Classics, Sports, and Outdoor Activities. I now do Romance as well. It's a great environment here. It's definitely the best bookstore in town. You can not beat these prices."
-Kathy Bast, Bookstore Volunteer
"I spent the summer volunteering at the Literacy Council as a public relations intern. It was a great experience as I gained a lot of valuable work experience, especially with helping to organize the Golden Mile and updating the website. I had a lot of fun in Alaska (I'm from Nebraska and came to Alaska just for the summer), and I will really miss working with the staff and volunteers here. The experience has helped me clarify my future goals for my career, and I know that I want to be with an organization that makes a positive impact on people's lives, just like LCA."
