Bookstore Volunteer
Located at Forget-Me-Not Books on 2216 S Cushman St.

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for committed volunteers to help keep our bookstore running smoothly. An ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about giving back to their community, is interested in books, and can commit a minimum of one hour per week.

Tasks we need assistance with:

Cleaning donated books
-
Shelving books in the store
-
Rotating books and pulling new items from the back
-
Maintaining the cleanliness of the store (dusting, straightening, and cleaning shelves)

Skills and Qualifications:
-
An interest in volunteering
-
Can commit a minimum of one (1) hour per week
-
Follows directions and works independently
-
Willing to get a little dusty
-
16 years and older (12 and older with an adult)
-
Must be able to pass a background check
English Language Learner (ELL) Tutor Volunteer
Located at the Literacy Council of Alaska on 724 27th Ave, Suite 2

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for committed volunteers to assist in one-on-one tutoring with diverse adult English language learning (ELL) students. An ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about giving back to their community, culturally aware, has experience in tutoring or teaching, and can commit a minimum of one hour per week. In-person and online opportunities available. Candidates living outside of Fairbanks are also encouraged to apply. Teacher training will be provided.
Responsibilities:

Meet regularly once or twice a week for one hour, for a minimum of 3 months with an adult English language learner(s) to work on their English language goals, ranging from basic literacy to speaking, reading, and writing at all levels

Take a whole-person approach to working with students
-
Plan lessons independently, utilizing recommended ELL guidelines and materials
-
Fill out monthly reports to document tutoring progress
-
Communicate as needed with program staff on student progress and attendance
-
Attend training workshops as needed
Skills and Qualifications:

An interest in volunteering

18 years and older
-
Follows directions and works independently

Excellent interpersonal communication skills

Cultural intelligence and sensitivity towards diverse cultural differences and traditions

Previous experience teaching or tutoring (ELL teaching experience preferred)

Can commit a minimum of one (1) hour per week

Must be able to pass a background check
English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher Volunteer

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for committed volunteers to assist in teaching small group classes with diverse adult ELL students. An ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about giving back to their community, has experience in tutoring or teaching, is culturally aware, and can commit a minimum of 1.5 hours per week. In-person and online opportunities available. Candidates living outside of Fairbanks are also encouraged to apply.

Prepare materials for class using the ELL curriculum
