Bookstore

Minimum Time: 

1 hr per/week

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for committed volunteers to help keep our bookstore running smoothly. An ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about giving back to their community, is interested in books, and can commit a minimum of one hour per week.


Tasks we need assistance with:

  • Cleaning donated books

  • Shelving books in the store

  • Rotating books and pulling new items from the back

  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the store (dusting, straightening, cleaning shelves)


Skills and Qualifications:

  • An interest in volunteering

  • Follows direction and works independently

  • 16 years and older (12 and older with an adult)

  • Willing to get a little dusty

  • Must be able to pass a background check

GED Tutor

Minimum Time: 

1 hr per/week

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for committed volunteers to assist in one on one tutoring with GED students. An ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about giving back to their community, has experience in tutoring or teaching, and can commit a minimum of one hour per week.


Responsibilities:

  • Meet regularly with the student(s) you are assigned

  • Use the GED curriculum to tutor students in whatever subject they’re working on

  • Take a whole person approach to working with students


Skills and Qualifications:

  • An interest in volunteering

  • Follows direction and works independently

  • 18 years and older

  • Previous experience teaching or tutoring

  • Can commit a minimum of one hour per week

  • Must be able to pass a background check

ELL Tutor

Minimum Time: 

1 hr per/week

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for committed volunteers to assist in one on one tutoring with diverse adult English language learning (ELL) students. An ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about giving back to their community, culturally aware, has experience in tutoring or teaching, and can commit a minimum of one hour per week. In-person and online opportunities available. Candidates living outside of Fairbanks are also encouraged to apply. Teacher training will be provided.


Responsibilities:

  • Meet regularly once or twice a week for one hour, for a minimum of 3 months with an adult English language learner(s) to work on their English language goals, ranging from basic literacy to speaking, reading, and writing at all levels

  • Take a whole person approach to working with students

  • Plan lessons independently utilizing recommended ELL guidelines and materials

  • Fill out monthly reports to document tutoring progress

  • Communicate as needed with program staff on student progress and attendance

  • Attend training workshops as needed

  • 18 years and older

  • Follows direction and works independently

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Cultural intelligence and sensitivity towards diverse cultural differences and traditions

  • Previous experience teaching or tutoring (ELL teaching experience preferred)

  • Can commit a minimum of one (1)  hour per week

  • Must be able to pass a background check

ELL Instructor

Minimum Time: 

1 hr per/week

The Literacy Council of Alaska is looking for committed volunteers to assist in teaching small group classes with diverse adult ELL students. An ideal candidate would be someone who is passionate about giving back to their community, has experience in tutoring or teaching, culturally aware, and can commit a minimum of 1.5 hours per week. In-person and online opportunities available. Candidates living outside of Fairbanks are also encouraged to apply.


Responsibilities:

  • Prepare materials for class using ELL curriculum

  • Take a whole person approach to working with students

  • Meet once or twice a week for a minimum of 1.5 hours, for a minimum of 3 months with an adult English language learner to work on their English language goals, which range from basic literacy to speaking, reading, and writing at all levels

  • Communicate as needed with program staff of student progress and attendance

  • Attend training workshops as needed
